While My Guitar Gently Weeps

The Beatles · The Beatles (White Album) · 1968

Clapton cut this live with the band on Harrison's cherry-red 1957 Les Paul "Lucy," bridge pickup, into one of the Beatles' own studio amps — most likely a Fender Deluxe pushed just past clean. The famous wobble is not a pedal or a Leslie: it's Abbey Road's ADT and tape flanging, hand-varied by Chris Thomas at the mix. Aim for a thick, mid-forward crunch with long sustain, a little reverb, and a slow shallow flange over the top.

Engineer Ken Scott says Clapton deliberately brought no gear of his own and used the Beatles' amps, and nobody at the session recalls which one; Guitar World names a Fender Deluxe, while others point to Harrison's blonde Fender Bassman or a Vox, and an old rumor of a Leslie cabinet is really the studio ADT/flanging. Deluxe Reverb has no mid or presence control, so those are null; push the Volume until the amp is just breaking up.

Pedals

  • Flanger (studio ADT substitute) · modulation · Slow rate (~0.2 Hz), shallow depth, low regeneration, ~30% mix — Harrison wanted it 'more Beatley,' so Chris Thomas hand-waggled the tape oscillator; no pedal was used on the session

Tone character

fat humbucker sustain · moderate tube breakup · forward mids · woolly top end · slow tape-style wobble

medium

The notes are simple A minor pentatonic, but everything rides on whole-step bends that land exactly in tune and a wide, sustained vibrato held long enough to sing.
