Basket Case

Green Day · Dookie · 1994

The Basket Case riff is one guitar into one amp: Billie Joe's $180 Fernandes Strat copy "Blue" on the bridge humbucker, tuned a half step down, into Rob Cavallo's modded 100-watt Marshall Super Lead Plexi and a 4x12. No pedals were used on Dookie, so the dirt is all amp — medium-high gain with pushed mids and a bright, tight edge rather than a saturated scoop. Keep the bass reined in, mids up, and let hard downstroked palm muting do the work.

Rob Cavallo supplied his 1971 1959SLP for the sessions, run into a Marshall 4x12; the Custom Audio Electronics/Bob Bradshaw cascaded-gain "Dookie mod" is credited to this amp, though accounts differ on whether it was already modded at tracking or copied afterward onto Billie Joe's own head. No session knob positions are published; Armstrong's tech has described the live heads as roughly noon on the EQ with gain and master around 10 o'clock, and the values here follow that plus the record's crunch level.

Tone character

forward mids · tight palm-muted crunch · bright top, no fizz · controlled low end · humbucker punch

easy

Steady two-note power chords at a fast tempo with tight palm muting and mostly downstrokes — easy shapes, but the right hand has to stay even for three minutes.
