Dreams

Fleetwood Mac · Rumours · 1977

The famous electric part on "Dreams" isn't an amp sound at all — Buckingham's Stratocaster went through a volume pedal into a direct box feeding a Leslie cabinet in an iso booth, with a lavalier mic on the bridge catching the string clink and echo over the top. Play it clean with zero gain, a slow rotary and a bit of delay, and swell each chord in with a volume pedal so the pick attack is gone. The acoustic strum that fills out the chorus is a separate layer, so don't try to get both sounds from one guitar.

Tuning

Standard tuning, no capo

The record layers two rhythm parts in standard tuning: Buckingham's swelling electric Fmaj7–G figure through the Leslie, plus a strummed steel-string acoustic that supports the chorus; if you want easier shapes, capo 5 and play Cmaj7–D.

Amp

Leslie rotating speaker cabinet

Co-producer Ken Caillat has described the Dreams chain as Strat into a volume pedal into a direct box feeding a Leslie in an isolation booth, with an ECM-50 taped to the bridge for string sound and echo over the whole thing; a competing forum account claims a Les Paul rather than a Strat, and another that an MXR Attack Decay, not a volume pedal, made the swells.

No guitar amp is documented on this part — the electric went direct and through the Leslie — so this is a practical substitute: set it fully clean with no breakup and let the rotary and echo do the work.

Pedals

  • Volume pedal (Morley VOL) · volume · Pedal closed, pick the chord, then swell up so the attack disappears; the swell is the whole character of the part
  • Rotary speaker simulator · modulation · Slow rotor, medium depth, mix around 70% — a slight wobble, not a chorus
  • Tape/plate echo · delay · Quarter-note-ish repeats, one or two audible, mix low to medium behind the rotary

Tone character

clean, no dirt · slow rotary swirl · soft swelled attack · warm rounded highs · wet with echo

easy

Two chords the whole way (Fmaj7 to G6), so the work is not the fretting hand but holding a lazy, even eighth-note feel and timing the volume swells so each chord blooms instead of being picked.
